Looking to pick up my first Bichir...I thinking up picking up an 7-8" Endli but have never own a bichir before so any input would help, I'll be doing some research for the next few days but have a question be for I put in the time...I currently have a 5"-6" (disc diameter) hytrix sting ray and 3x 5" pbass...I more worried about my ray...any thoughts..thanks, Joe

Polypterus are 'usually' only aggressive towards their own species, but then again I've seen them kept in groups. The only other problems with them arise when kept with fish that they can fit in their mouths. Hope that helps a bit.

Go read the posts in the stickie section. And how big is your tank?I have known rays and bichirs kept together and being fine together and I have heard horro stories of te combo it really depends on the agressiveness of the individual fish involved-Anne

my senegal is only 4 inches, and i've found 3 fish already with their guts chomped out by him. good thing he's cool or i would be upset. most were just a dime a dozen fish that are as good as feeders anyway. just saying, don't expect a bichir to be totally docile and peaceful

Large rays will be fine with bichirs, but anything smaller than 8" will then the rays will be in trouble. The problem usually happens during feeding time as the bichirs will accidentally bite the disk or the tail of the rays and do a death role. However if the ray is around 10" in disk diameter or bigger then it should be fine. The only thing I'm worried about is the pbass as it will grow faster than the bichir and it might eat the bichir. If the bichir is large the pabass could choke to death. And a 5" pbass is will only get eaten by a 8" bichir. I have a 8" Midas ciclid that got death rolled by my 7-12" endli during lights out. Bichirs are unpredictable when mix with cichlids during lights out.

Also read the stickies it will help you a lot.

I'd be more worried about the pbass at this time. The ray and the endli are close enough to the same size where they should be fine, but the pbass are dinner sized right now.

Long term though, assuming the pbass make it, I would be worried about the endli as well.

You have to love fish keeping. Anything can happen at any time.

If I am a first time bichir keeper, I would buy a small 1 like say 2-3 inches and keep them from young to monitor their habits. A larger bichir would have their habits fixed and harder to customised their character.

Not a pro but just my 2cents =)

I'd have to tell you to err on the side of caution now that I've read the other posts. I personally have never experienced any problems with bichirs and cichlids as far as aggression goes, however; rays are totally different due to the vulnerability of the disk. Listen to the other members and be wary. GL.

yup they are gonna be just fine.. make sure to isolate the fish if he is aggressive to the others

rays and bichirs are fine i have 2 rays with 15 bichirs and 2nd tank 1 ray with 1 bichir
