So I've been contemplating setting up another fish tank... I've got a 60 gal but I was thinking of starting off small for now since I may be moving and eventually move the fish into my 60 gal. I'm gonna start off with a 20 Gallon and I really want a community tank with live plants. I'm gonna go with a few angelfish initially, but how many should I keep in the 20 gal and what other fishmates could I consider?

Angelfish will eventually need a bigger tank. They can grow to be quite large and are know to eat smaller tankmates. And they tend to be prone to fin nipping. Try some plecos or the bigger livebearers.

Angels start small, but like Stormfire said they get big. If you end up with a pair, and they decide they want to have babies, they will terrorize every fish in the tank. Although I've heard of pairs of angelfish in a 20 gallon, I don't really like the idea.

Personally, for a small set up, I'd do small tetras or live bearers. No plecos, they(most) get too big. As for plants, there are all kinds you could do. I've had lots of success with swords and... I forget the name of the other plant. I'll get back to you.

The name of the other plant is Sagittaria subulata, it may or may not be a dwarf variety, but the picture I found looks a lot like the plant in my aquariums.

I remember the first fish tank I had as a kid had 3 angelfish and i think 4 swordtails... The angels and the swordtails ended up breeding in that tank but since my parents and I didn't know wtf was going on back then with aquariums, The angels' eggs ended up being eaten up and the swordtails' babies eventually all ended up dying or being eaten. Please keep the suggestions coming!

Any angelfish should be in a tank with a minimum of 18" of height. My smallest angel has a height of 7" when its fins are erect. Most 20G's are smaller then 15" in height.
