I got this new fish that looks like a bluegill and has a slightly larger mouth compared to other sunnies I catch and has orange tips on its fins. Also the ones that I catch in streams are dark purple in color. Anybody have any clue what type of sunnie this is?

Which fins have the orange tips? What color are the "ear" flaps? What pattern/colors are on the body? Any chance you could get a pic?

its the male bluegill spawning stripes on the side and just a normal sized ear-flap like a pumpkinseed with a goldish outline

Most likely a green sunfish.

I'm also thinking green sunfish. Are there lots of blue iridescent lines on the "cheek" area?

It could also be a hybrid of 2 or more local species.
Also very plausible. Lepomis hybridize pretty readily

Orange tips amd larger than normal mouth is a dead giveaway for a greenie.

Also slightly noticable vertical bars and a longer body are also good clues, they are not quite as "round" as a bluegill, more bass shaped.
