Something is wrong with Izzy, but I'm not sure what it is. She was in the 29, and doing fine and getting big, so we upgraded her to the 55. She's the smallest bichir in that tank, at around 10-11'', with the others ranging from 12'' to 14'', but we decided to do it because she was beating up the other half grown fish in the 29. She's a tough fish... Anyway, she's been getting a little bit of static from the other fish in this tank. Some tail and belly nipping, but on the outside she looks just fine. Her tail fin is split, but I've seen much worse. It isn't even red. But she's disoriented. She's swimming along the bottom, listing from left to right. She swims into the log, and tries to swim through it. I noticed this first on Friday night, and it's not getting any better. Checked the water and everything is fine... nitrates a bit high but nothing to be worried about. I treated that already. I've gotten no new fish so she wasn't exposed to anything.

Any ideas?

possibly a head injury from hitting the glass running from the big bichirs ... my suggestion would be to put the bichir in quaranteen tank and re-evaluate and perhaps give her time to recover ...

I've made some changes, both in my collection and tank set ups. I created an "urgent care" tank... I won't call it a Hospital tank because not all the fish in it are sick. I downgraded Izzy back to the 30, the urgent care tank now. It also contains a lap and a Nigerian endli that I bought today, both of which are in "urgent" need of a lot of food. Also contains an older Nigerian endli that got tossed around a bit by one of the Buettes I traded in today. It has substantial fin damage and isn't eating quite as much. This tank is our centerpiece, mostly because of it's location, so we'll be able to keep a close eye on all of these fish. The lights will stay out to lower stress levels. I'll keep everyone updated on their progress as time goes on.

My albino senegalus was acting weird too. It was being harassed by my normal senegalus who is slightly smaller then him. :swear: It perked back up a few hours after I relocated the bully.
I hope yours has a quick recovery too. Good luck.

Well, good news and bad news. The anorexic fish I bought are doing great and eating like horses. They're filling out very nicely and I'll be moving them soon. But Izzy... I don't know guys. I really don't. I feel like I need to be thinking about ending her pain, not that I have any clue how. She's worse. I haven't seen her eat since sometime last week, and she's now swimming in all different directions. She can NOT swim upright at all... she sort of swirls around the tank rotating 360 degrees, landing on her back, etc. Still no visible signs of injury, and her fins have healed. I don't get it. If she was YOUR fish, would you put her down?

if it was my fish I would not put her down. you wouldn't know, she might pull through. in my opinion give it some hope and a little faith will help.;) hope things turn out nice.:)

Still no better. I just saw her spinning on her head like a top. I feel horrible :(

have you tried medicating it? it could well be a bacterial infection try maracyn-2 if that doesn't work put her down -Anne

Began treatment of Maracyn2... will update tomorrow... unless she eats tonight.
