loss of color in my flowerhorn's head and face is it something bad?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Is it Breathing heavily almost looks like it's gasping for air. I would check my water parameters and increase aeration.

He is one year old now I didn't find any problem with his breathing.. but recently his redness got reduced a lot in his head and face will he gain his color if I give food that would help him increase the redness

I feed mine Grand Sumo red which seems to do well. What diet is your flowerhorn currently on?

I feed him like 30plus pellets which he can consume in 5min but now I reduced it to 15. Did I over feed him? He looks happy and active but the color makes me worry.

Did you feed him the "Bumpy Head" product the whole time?

Now I'm giving him xo ever red food for ten days but there is not much increase in his color. Should I give him any treatment for this or is it normal for him to lose color like this.

Food has very minor effect on colour, just feed a good quality pellet. Supplement with bugs and frozen. I would bet most of the colour enhancer specific foods rely more on a random concoction of ingredients in higher than necessary concentrations (xantiia red and ceratine or whatever they are) than actually a healthy balanced diet, add to that fancy packaging to draw in the buyers
If he is infact healthy and your tank has plenty of surface agitation and clean water then I would look at stress, does he have caves for some alone time?
Also consider FH have Midas traits and along with many other centrals their colour changes continuously as they grow, Midas and rd in particular generally grow lighter and lighter as they age.
What's your water change schedule, I would stress that barely anyone does enough, minimum of 75% but ideal fin level per week every week.
Read up on 'nitrate creep' and think of most aquatic habitats having well below 1ppm.
