my water params were perfect all the other fish are good and thriving, he just dies on me. i never belived the random death syndrom that scombs face but i guess now i am a beliver. =[ :( i had him for a little over a 1year eating live.

that sucks. just lost a few red tails of same size myself. did you check it's nose? I suspect mine bashed themselves after getting scared.

thanks ben,

man im freezing him so i can keep him longer but i dont suspect anything physical happend, maybe parasites. im not sure. =/

Maybe just the same reason all Scombs die prematurely in captivity?

Do you mean their for rep for dropping dead at or before they reach twelve inches?

Yes. I'd love for the myth to be put to rest but at this point, of all the Scombs that have been out there, I don't think it's just a "myth". There's been plenty of experienced Payara keepers that have tried to keep them and they just don't seem to really even get that close to a foot.

Its been a bad week for deaths so far.

madness lost a few characins (tats and cuda)
you lost a scomb
i lost my oldest hujeta- which is'nt that important but it was the only known female I have ever seen. And my only one that has dropped eggs.

Don't feel bad about losing the scomb man it comes with the territory. I have kept 10-12 of them in the past 5yrs and I have zero now. My oldest one I had for 2yrs from 5-8''.

got 3 scombs at 6-7inch mark. may be they'll die soon, we'll see.

received news via SMS (im out of town) another tat doing the head rolls and prob soon to bite the dust today. same fish had some fin damage from an aggressive cichlid, but appeared in OK condition.

very frustrating to be away. tested all my water params before leaving and they were spot on. cichlid was put in another tank. my only conclusion is that they don't spook well. Sort of like small birds...

but then again i've had a scomb and rhalph heal from gash wounds so... it really is mysterious...
