tonight i lost my first ray.

i purchased one on the 12th of july, that passed away on the 25th (earlier today).
i noticed that she had what appeared to be ammonia burn on her underside when i got her home, so i only dripped her for about 20-30 min.

she seemed to do well, started eating up small cuts of earth worm and black worms. she stopped eating 2 days later and went on a food strike, wasn't 100% sure what it was, but i was guessing an internal parasite, so i quarantined her back into a med tank, without meds, just to see if she'd eat what i put in there. she chewed down some ghost shrimp and black worms, but not the earth worm pieces.
as days progressed she stopped eating black worms as well.
i kept up on clean water for her, changing daily.
yesterday, i gave her a quick metro bath and it seemed to really make her immediately more aware and she was swimming and her skin/slimecoat really started to glow well, instead of the faded color she was looking after 20 min.

this morning, i came down to see the death curl, still tried my best. gave her another metro bath but i think it was just too late. her stomach looks awful at the point of death. the other rays are still perfectly fine, same old selves.

i feel terrible for the little one, i'm guessing she was about 3 months old :( 3 inch disc orb ray.

let me know what you guys think.

her stomach had a smaller version of that when i bought her. now, i've done tests on all the tanks she was in, and none of them show any ammonia or nitrite, nitrate under 20. for the med tank, i transferred off filters from my main tank as i have extra running at all times for just this reason.

is it an infection? ammonia burn? internal parasites? your guess is as good as mine.

unfortunately although the fish store was made aware of it within the guarantee period, when i came back to buy the meds from them, i doubt they will help me in any way over this.

Sorry for your loss :(

Sounds like you did your best for her, IMO you may have moved her around a little too much. It might have been best to start her off by herself and get her eating well after her first move. The stress of moving her around may have contributed to her death but there is no way of knowing.

The redness on the one side of her disk is abnormal for sure, hope you can figure out what happened

thanks johno.

the med tank i moved her to was a bare bottom tank, so it wasn't abrasive gravel or sand on her underside.
my main tank has play sand in it that has been there for quite a while now, and my 2 retics have been on it for over a year and a half now, so i don't think it was that either.

my main interest at this point is figuring out what that discoloration was caused by. it was only a small patch 2 weeks ago when i first got her, and it REALLY spread and grew.

That sure sounds like some sort of infection. The original wound was probably the ammonia burn or whatever damage she had before you got her. That is a very tough thing to treat since you would really have no way of knowing what kind of infection it was

You did the best thing you could which was to keep the water very clean. Maybe someone else has more experience with this and could recommend treatment for anyone else with this problem. Or even tell you for sure if it was an infection or something else

Sorry to hear that you lost your stingray

Mine has the some of the same burn. I know we got them from the same tank and I know that the 3rd that was in that tank is lookin pretty rough too. I am really sorry for your loss but selfishly I hope mine makes it.

no offense taken, i hope yours makes it as well. has it gotten any worse on the ray since you first bought it?
i don't care for what the store kept them on, that aquarium gravel is junk in there. i actually found shards of that crap in my tank i had her in (easy to see with the med tank being bare bottom) from her having possibly chewed on it at the store. little blue pieces. i know it's not from my tank as i have only had play sand in it, i don't own any of that colored gravel, or have it in any of my tanks.

hoping someone might have some previous experience with what this looks like on the ray, that might have some insight, at least to help with bigdaddyk's if it worsens.
at this point, if yours is feeding well, not losing weight, and its underside isn't worsening, keep up with your water schedule and hopefully it will go away.

i gotta run out but i'll check back in later.

I wasn't pleased with the substrate either. That said they are not exclusively a specialty store and while that's not an excuse they do not have much variety in substrate. I was more worried about the size of the tank than the substrate.

I can't get mine to eat anything other than earthworms but I'm still working on it. I really want to get her on to frozen or pellets primarily but with the other fish in the tank I have to take what I can get so far.

IMO, I think you moved her around too much. I agree with johno27, it best to let her settle first and not move her around too much
