Goonch started to get some strange lesions or something on its skin. Water parameters were good. Can’t figure out what happened. Water got really cold and this is when is seems to start. I did have one left that appears to be doing fine. I am very upset about it. He was around 2 ft long.
Well lost the other one this afternoon. Had to be some kind af parasite or disease. This one was just over 2 years old.
Kind of discouraged, not sure if I want to try again with the goonch.
Tank parameters were normal. My heater did go out and the water temp dropped 53*f. That is the only thing I can think. Maybe the temperature swing?
I had one lowland and one highland.
Very sorry to see your loss. The heater failure is most likely to blame. A sudden and prolonged drop in temperature will certainly be stressful and impact the fishes immune system making it more vulnerable to diseases, fungus, bacterial infection and the ability to heal abrasions and wounds. I lost a 3 year old favorite S.A. Redtail years ago when the heater failed and the water got way cold. It may have been a day or two before I realized it as I noticed the start of a severe fungus infection. After treating it for fungus and having replaced the heater, the infection had become so advanced, two days later it was sadly too late and beyond recovery. I've also had heater thermostat's fail, overheat and kill everything in the tank. I did notice the lesion on the fish rather than an obvious fungal infection but again it could be something that in normal water parameters the fish could tolerate or have immunities from rather than some new parasite. Research shows that bagarius species temperature tolerances range from 64 to 74 degrees so an 11 degree drop below that is very significant, possibly enough to bring on organ failure among those other possibilities. I wouldn't let this tragedy discourage you from keeping them again in the future as obviously you were able to raise two of these from different regions for a long period of time, so you do have the knowledge and skills to keep these fish, not everyone does...
