I thought i'd post on here today after i lost my 17inch UK bred leo last night. I'd had him under a year but hed grown substantially and id really gotten attached to him in that time.
Sadly my heater failed and dropped to 70 while i was out decorating my new house and by the time i got back it was too late.
To say im gutted is an understatement (i didnt sleep last night) especially since i'd just ordered his new home for the new house (72X30X20) and planned my new fishhouse/garage around him. I doubt i'll ever manage to get another Leo again but i know for sure i'll be keeping my hystrix with a back up heater from now on.

:(

Sorry to hear this Chris. i have this problem too, temp drop to 70 but i was lucky the rays are still OK.

I am sorry for your loss...

what was the temp inside your house ? Temp drop is not fatal as long as done gradually. I don't run heaters on any of my tanks, during 24 hour period, temp can go from 80 ish to 68-70 ish.

Sorry also, ^^^ Ditto^^^^ My heater failed and it was 3-4 days before I got a replacement. Temp was down to 70-72 and the pups were all still eating and behaving fine. I am just glad it didn't fail by sticking on.

i was going to say the same.... i dont think a temp drop to 70 will kill a healthy ray..

Mine gets mid 70's to mid 80's depending on the time of season, and temp fluctuation in house.

But i have said this before, my flower does seem to act different when temps get below 77-78 degrees.

i have had times when a pup tank got down to 70 and all rays were fine, just slowed them down a bit.

My tanks stay warm from the pumps... but my pup tank does not have big enough pump so have to run a heater on it.

Sad to hear about this....

Chin up though, the price of leos is cheaper than it ever has been in the past. Hopefully by the time u set up the tank, they will be more affordable.

Sorry for your loss, we have all been there before. You might want to check for other possible causes though, like the others I have had temps drop down to 70 before with no losses, in my tank with 5 leos and 3 henleis actually. My old pond actually dropped to 60 once without casualties as well, had motoros and a henlei in there at the time.

Unless that temp dropped real fast I would not consider it the cause. Just my opinion.

I lost a Leo before due to a temp dropping to 70! Well that's what I think. Seems everybody elses rays had nonproblem with the temp being at 70. Hmmm...
