hello all, this morning i woke up to my oldest goldfish severus sitting on the bottom of the tank and almost on his side, right away i was worried, i added the correct ammount of melafix to the tank and hoped for the best. well it was to little to late i noticed at about 10pm that he was right on his side at the bottom of the tank, i also noticed that there was a little blood coming from his gills. i instantly grabed him and decided to end it. as hard as it was i took his head off, its the best way i have of doing this deed. regardless i had noticed a change in his appetite in the last week. but nothing that would trigger anything this serious. his dorsal fin wasnt always fully up but that wasnt anything unnormal. the only thing i could see was the loss of appetite. i feed my fish hikari lionhead sinking pellet. there is no ammonia reeding and no nitrite reading, well its the lightest colour blue i can tell. the ph is 7.5 and i use an emperor 400 and a 40 gal foam filter, marineland ammo, carb and rite size e filters. i will be watching my other fish very carefully over the next week. if anybody knows why blood would be coming from the gills when breathing let me know please, i had this goldfish for 2 years and it was 12 inches with tail i loved this fish. RIP severus

Have any of these fish been treated for flukes before? If not, now is the time to treat them with praziquantel. Flukes are quite prevalent among goldfish. Have you noticed scratching behavior?

no i have never bought a gill fluke specific medication, and no i cant remember any scratching going on other than maybe when i fed, he would do a dive and swim along the bottom of the tank, i didnt think anything of it cause it was only during feeding. i thought he was just trying to get at the sinking pellets. i still have a lot to learn. i do however always have a little salt in my tanks about a tablespoon per 5 gal. and all new fish go into a quarintine tank of a little higher salt, and melafix and pimafix. i have had goldfish with bad eye fungus, dropsy and septicimia but this is the first for blood out of the gills, i will go tomorrow and get some prazi pro, i have heard it is one of the best for the job. i will definately be on the lookout in my tank for the next few weeks. thanks for the advice i should have had that stuff from the start i guess. well new post for the lessons learned eh. once again thanks

i'm off today to get some prazi pro i think after this i will have finalized my goldfish cure pack. i have always had good results with salt melafix and pimafix, from what i have heard prazi pro is one of the best for flukes, i have used the mardel products in the past and find that unless your fish is pretty much dead its to strong. but still it brought severus back from the worst case of eye fungus i have ever seen. that was within the first week i had him. since that he has had no problems and has filled my tank with his seed on many occasions. the first time it happened i thought i had water problems cause i would do a water change and then the next day it would be cloudy as hell. went through 3 weeks of this and then found out he was a male. all was good. like i said it was quite a surprise to see him in a not good state, i never got to get a pic with a measuring tape but believe me when i say he was 12 inches with tail. he will be missed greatly.
