Very wierd situation.

I found one of my big sevs (8") laying on its side with some clear damage to his mouth/head/gill area.

He's in with another 6" sev, 8" Oscar, and 4" firemouth.

The only other fish in the tank with any "battle damage" was the firemouth. The O has never shown any major aggression but you never know I guess.

I find it hard to believe that a 4" FM could kill a severum twice its size. I'm pretty bummed about it, that was a cool fish and that group has gotten along for almost a year with no issues. Any thoughts?

My firemouths spend all day flaring their gills, but never really fight anyone. Despite not having damage, my bet would be the oscar

Are severums fairly hardy, I am interested in getting one for a tank with the tankmates listed below at a later date.

with a tank that big i say get some real fish! a pair of festae, or some smaller cichlids. or a school of uarus. that just seems like a waste to me. maybe its just cause im a cichlid guy! im not trying to be a jerk f.y.i. im just voicing my opinion. s.a. and c.a. are much more personable and some are sooo bad ass! salvinis, festae, motaguense, PIKES!

as for the o.p. im very sorry to hear about your loss (i love sevs.) i say boot the oscar and firemouth an get a few pairs of dif kinds of sevs. depending on gallonage (is that a word?)
