my heater went crazy and the water got to 90. 2 are dead and the rest are hiding in driftwood. hopefully they pull through.

this sucks!!!!

i found one floating this morning, then went to check on them becauese i was getting a snack, and another one floating, and a third one looks like hes ready to go, gasping for air andhis mouth is pretty wide open, never seen a loach with its mouth open like that.i hope cooling the water helps out.

How big where ur loaches kabayan?

i have 9 yoyos still alive but they are feeling the heat for sure. not as active right now i think because of the heat.

Dont drop the temp too quickly! Float a bag of ice so it comes down slowly. Better yet, add another airstone or powerhead to oxygenate the water & put a the ice bag on the airlines to cool the air. That will suck the heat out quick, so keep an eye on it. I would prepare for some Ick on any Loaches that survive, though. Thats a big temp swing. Maybe let them down to like 85 today, then down to your regular temp (78? 82?) tomorrow. I would probably do it over 3 days myself...

i switched out heaters and now the temp is at 85. so far just 3 casualties. the other 2 clown loaches are yet to be found. im hoping the last two come out from hiding.

Most fish handle quickly increasing temperatures better than quickly decreasing temperatures... but naturally there is a max level of heat all fish can tank. But I've always understood Clown Loaches can handle warmer tamps better than many others. I would be surprised if 90*F water actually killed them...

What did the fish look like that was dead? I would suspect it died from a lack of oxygen or slight possibility of ick. Temperature swings can definitely invite ick, but I'd be surprised if it died that quickly from it...

According to the time stamps on the posts, it looks like the water took 7~9 hours to cool from 90* to 85*. I wouldn't expect this to be cooling the water to quickly...

Hot hater contains less oxygen, so adding an airstone immediately was great advice, although I think your past the point of that being critical. Although if you have the means of adding surface agitation / circulation, I would still do so.

It also makes sense to prepare yourself to treat the tank for illness. Keep in mind that Clown Loaches are scaless fish and many medications are not suitable for scaless fish.

Best of luck!
