Was in the middle of moving up to a 120 gal tank from a 55 when a family member became seriously ill. All of the attention went in that direction and I knew what was going to happen...and it did. The 55gal went sour and picked up tons of ammonia and nitrites. To make matters worse the new tank was running hot becase I was using a Mag pump - which cools itself by the aquarium water. It was hitting 84 degrees and rising.
By the time I changed pumps, cooled the water and transfered the fish it was too late. They became poisoned and started to die off after several days. The new tank was not ready to handle the bio load and it spiked ammonia, nitrites, etc. I had to "Anbesol" half of my fish.
One survived after all that. I put him in my hospital tank with Marycyn 1 and Coppersafe and he recovered well but was somewhat weak. He looked great for days. Then I did a 50% water change. The fish swam up in the bubbles of the freshwater coming into the tank and then died minutes later.
End of an era.
Right now I have two feeders in the tank and I am watching them carefully for anything odd. So far so good. Gonna start stocking (slowly) again soon.
