Lota Lota

Hi. I have had those in an aquarium back in the days. The days when it was possible to spend half of my holidays knee-deep in ponds, lakes and rivers.

They are quite abundant where I come from. Small individuals can be found under rocks and logs in shallow water.

They usually did start feeding during the day when offered pieces of fish or such. Other than that absolutely no activity during daylight.
Coldwater tank, of course. Lots of oxygen.

They did allright in an aquarium, at least when quite small. Mine were about 2-3 inches when caught and less than 10 inches when I got rid of them.
Smaller fish disappeared one by one.

The largest I've caught (fishing with a net) have been almost 3 feet long.

Freshwater Cusk (Lota lota) AKA Ling, Lawyer, Burbot
Its in the Gadidae family along with Cod. You would need a chiller. They are usually found under the ice. Usually about 1-2ft long, but the British subspecies reaches 5ft long!

We catch them ice fishing! They are a burbot, with many local names such as fresh water cod, dog fish etc.

Largest I've seen was 8 pounds, caught while ice fishing with a buddy and his young boys. His youngest (4 yrs) thought that the minnows we were baiting the hooks with were the size of the fish we were after. He would lower the hook and minnow, then bring it up and exclaim "Fishy!! Fishy!!", and of course we would praise him for his great catch.

I got a bite, so I asked him to use my rod for a while, just to give him the opportunity to catch something bigger than a minnow.

Well the 8 lb burbot came out, and he didn't stop screaming for an hour!!

I know it sounds mean now, but it still cracks me up........just imagine thinking you were getting a minnow when......
