I have a 10g , 36g and a 180g tank. I did my regular water change and cleaning (50% on 10 and 36 and 60% on 180). Clean algae, etc... All tanks have been running for 6 months to a year and are fully cycled. I did not have Prime so I went and got some AmQuel from PetCo since my LFS was not open. I did my water change and added salt and conditioner as it was filling through python. Fish ate great about 2 hours later.

About three hours later, I came home and only in my 180g, fish were breating really hard (fast, open mouth). Other tanks were fine. I imediately checked water - Ammonia - 0.0, Nitrite 0.0, Ph 7.6 (normal) and nitrate 0-5 (very slight). Fish active and swimming.

My daughter wakes me early and says fish are all on top of water gasping....I immediatly grab the python and start another water change. While draining, I test water and it still is the same? I do about a 75% change anf add a different conditioner (Aqua Safe) and do not use salt this time.

I come home and some fish have color back, and are active. Breathing slightly heavy but better. HOWEVER, in my 36, I have a dead Rasbora, a dead Angel and anothe large Angel laying on her side, plus all fish breathing heavy. I immediately start draining and testing water Everything was fine, but Nitirte which was nearing .25....I do a 75% water change and add conditiner and no salt. Fish Ok but one Angel still slow and probably won't make it....

I can't think what is wrong?? I did everything as normal,, no changes at all.....

1) Could too much salt cause this? I go by instructions but maybe too much?
2) AmQuel? Bad bottle..too much, etc...No date on bottle...
3) I cleaned and changed all filters last week, water perfect all week?

Any Ideas?????

I plan on doing another big change on both tanks later today.....No issues with the 10g....???(Did a 50% anyway? All tanks have been cycled for 1 year + and no new fish introduced, and no signs of any sickness prior....

kick back with water changes.50% or more is too much unless your tank is contaminated.
usually best to do no more than 30%.if you need to do a big water change make sure you have enough good bacteria in the filterations.slowy refill the water dripdrop.best to use reverse osmosis(drinking water).than you can do as much water change as you want.

I felt I had to do large changes as I believed it was contaminated to a certain extent. All parameters were excellent. I did another 40% change later today and continue to monitor the parameters. All fish sem to be doing better, breathing easier and look hungry. I will wait to feed them until tomorrow. Every single fish seems to have been affected to a degree. Colors are coming back. The large Angel in the 36 probably won't make it. For awhile, she just laid on her side breathing heavy. You hanks for any inputs. My water changes tomorrow will be smaller and bought some prime. At this point, the only thing I can think of is the NovaCare conditioner.....I also may lose my 4 inch Rainbow Fish as they have rd bellies now and have slowed down....They are dithers in the 180 but have been extremely hardy. Also, slowly adding salt....and keping temp at about 82-83.

You could have killed all the BB in your filters if you "changed" them all. What type of filtration do you have? HOBs? Canister?

On the 36, I have one cannister XP3, and it was over a week ago that I changed the filter media. I always use tank water for the BIO media and always check the parameters fro a couple of days after changes. Only noticed changed after last water change, but parameters are fine, so I don't think I messed with the BIO. Even with 2 dead fish for a few hours, only slight nitrite spike, which is gone. The 180 has two XP3's, and a w/d. I added an old Aqua Clear HOB with Carbon today to add additional filtration. Water has always been clean and clear. I do regular water changes every week, and if I get busy, none have gone two weeks without changes. That is why I am so confused....

What's up with the salt? Why? What kind of salt?

I just use normal aquarium salt and add a little to the tank when I do water changes. It has always kept fish heathly. Helps with fins, slime coat, etc...

nothing wrong with the salt, as long as you used 1 tbs per 5 gallons or less.

since it happened right after a water change I'm wondering whether there was something added to the water by the water company although amquel does get chloramine,
sometimes the tap water has some nitrate..
on the dissolved 02, it's my understanding that aeration needs to be good as amquel also uses up some oxygen
