So I have a pondmaster 2400 (2400gph) on my 120 and it's really loud. I'm thinking about blocking off the back side of the stand and lining the inside of the stand with some mats to dampen the sound. Anyone have any other options that might work better?

Has it been noisy since day one or getting progressively worse?

In or out of a sump?

What is it mounted on?

You may have to experiment with the sound deadening material, whatever you use, if it is by the sump it will have to be water/mold resistant. I have had success with rubber backed outdoor carpet with eggcrate foam over it.

If you insulate (sound deadening), you still have to ventilate or the pump may overheat.

Keep us posted on what you do, it can always help others.

Pump is brand new.. maybe 30 min total run time on it, I'm still setting up the tank.

It's mounted in the aquarium, but not really mounted just laying on some filter floss to keep from vibrating to much. I'm assuming it's not vibration though as it sounds more like a hum then a vibration.

You could try setting it on closed cell foam to help dampen vibrations.

Any chance you could exchange it to see if another would be as noisy?

You shouldn't hear much in a 120g tank.

Oh.. the wet / dry is only 29 gallons, the actual tank is 120 gallons.

It came with the tank when I bought it and the guy doesn't have the receipt anymore. So technically it was free which is why I want to use it.. Free is good :D

Do you mean something similar to styrofoam?

Gotcha.. I put a piece of plywood behind the rear of the stand and it seems to help a bit, maybe that combined with some other small stuff it will be manageable.

also might want to check and make sure its the sump humming and not the return lines touching something and vibrating/amplifying the noise

Possibly try adding 4 globs of silicone to the bottom for feet. May aid in vibration surpression

This is what I do to baffle the sound of my 2400, it sits on a similar sponge that is braced on the PVC pipe in the pic. This is a stronge pump, and really needs serious baffle to keep the hum in check.
