I am currently running a Mag12 pump with my 40 gallon breeder DIY wet/dry.

So yesterday I re did the pvc plumbing and changed the (in-let) pipes from 3/4 to 1.5 inch and left my drain (out-let drain) at 2 inch. Now my house sounds like Niagara falls! Wow my fishes loves it! The very strong current makes them more alive but at the same time it's not too strong of a current (i'm just exagerating a lil bit).

Can this be good? Any ideas on how to keep the noise down?

having the same problem running a magdrive 12 also and a home made sump the water falling from the buckets into the sump sounds like its raining never was able to quiet it down but it oxygenates the water very well so i left it

I am using a home-made sump and the outlet siphon from the tank to the sump is noisy, too.

The sump sits to the side of the aquarium stand (not underneath), so there was enough space to dampen some of the noise and splashing by inverting an 18-gallon clear plastic Sterlite storage box over the top of the box that holds the filter media.

Just dremelled a hole in the side of the box for the siphon outlet to fit through, and zip-tied one of the corners to keep the cats out. It's actually pretty handy, the splashes are contained, the noise level is much less, and the zip-tied corner acts like a hinge for moving the top to get into the filter media part.

deflecting the water so that it doesn't hit directly onto the surface will soften the noise. adding an object that will redirect the water a couple times will help. some small pieces of acrylic would do the trick

Yea lets see some pictures of what you guys are talking about.

I cut up a small piece of foam water board, drilled holes in it, and rubber banded it to my HOB in my turtle tank. It's not exactly elegant, but it works, and it was free. I will try to get some pics. Water hits the board and goes thru the holes, etc. - well most of it does. You can rubber band some stringy mech filter pads as well. Those work too in dampening the sound.

Here I made this using one of the old sleves from a Magnum 350 canister filter. This is for a turtle tank/tub. It's basically nothing more than a fine mechanical filter padding I cut up and secured to the inside of the TopFin HOB lid.. Cut your peices according to how much noise your after. The length in these pics cut the water noise to absolute silence. Shop the stores you might find a mech pad with a more neutral color (black) etc.

If water is coming out of a pipe I am sure you could roll it up and secure it to the inside of the pipe. Or to the outside with a rubberband. Sort of like a gun muzzle. hehe

Hope this helps.

not a bad idea at all! You think that if I rolled up some filter pad and kinda stuff it in there that it would help? I might just try it.

After a long days work I came home to an on-going Niagara falls... actually.. a lot more like a toilet that flushes and doesn't stop... lol.. anyways you all get the point.
