First off this is something I think would make a really cool setup but haven't decided 100% if I want to do it or not... I was thinking of making a tank of Louisiana native fish, they don't have to live ONLY in Louisiana or anything like that, just fish that could be found in the lakes and rivers of Louisiana. ANy fish native to Louisiana that would make an interesting setup. It doesn't even have to be fish that are readily available at fish stores. So basically just wanted to see what everyone would recomend as far as stocking, tank size (in reference to stock list) temps etc... I have only raised tropical fish up to this point so I don't even know where to start. Thanks in advance for everyones help

Dollar Sunfish, Golden topminnows, Louisiana Longears, Madtoms are all pretty cool looking fish, depending on type and amount could be stocked in a 55-125 gallon (the dollars,Longears and topminnows and some of the big shiners you guys have are beautifull). If you want to go to a bigger tanks you could get Redbreasts,Green Sunfish, chain pickerels, Bullheads,Bowfins, shortnose gars etc.

I really like that list actually (both for the smaller tank and the larger tank) Never would have thought I would have an answer off the first post... thanks! The only other fish that I might would try would be some of the bass species we have here.

Any thoughts on the native bass?

The only problem with Bass is that you have to go huge in terms of tank size. I'd love to keep some LMB one of these days but theres so much else that I'd like to keep in that size tank that I'd have trouble deciding.
I'd say sunfish are the best bet. Lots of personality and you can stay smallish depending on the species. I keep Bluegill myself and wouldn't trade them for any cichlid in the world.

I agree, the only Bass Ive ever wanted to keep is Ozark or Roanoke Bass (you guys have Shadow Bass and Warmouth which are both pretty awesome too).

Ok sounds good. Thanks again for all the help. I really like these ideas and hope to get this thing up and going before too long!

One last thing, would the sunfish be more suited in a tank with lots of open swimming space or one with more plants and rocks for hiding places?

It all depends on the Sunfish (Warmouth, Shadowbass, like cover and plants and rocks; Bluegill,Redbreasts like open areas; whereas Greens, Longears and Orangespots seem to like a mix) In the tank I had greens in , it had one side with plants, rocks in the middle and sand on the other side. From what Ive seen they all like driftwood.

I’ve been using a 75 for years. But I also have a 2270 gallon pool / pond in the yard for out grows. I’ve gone through Bass, Eels, Long Ears, Blue Gills, Rock Bass and you name it I have had it a time or two. Right now I have six baby Chain Pickerel and a mid size Pirate Perch and some Madtoms in the tank. Outside in there are four nice Cats (two black bulls and two yellow bulls) and a number of Breem. I have a good Mosquitofish colony going for feed for my Pickerel. When the cats get to big for the pond I guess they will end up on the table.
