I got a lung fish a couple months ago...i think he's about 9 mos or a year old, and he's 13" long...right no we have him in a 30 g long style tank and are upgrading next week to a 50g long tank.. we feed him shrimp and algea pellets, and feeder fish but he never eats them and they r getting 2 big 4 him 2 eat... the guy at the lps didnt' know much about him or what he was but i researched and researched and i know he is a marbled african lung fish and he's gonna b huge... the thing is i cant find anywhere what water temp he is supposed to be in.... right now he is at 28 degrees but i want to turn it down a bit and add my other goldfish to his tank... anyone here know more about these beautiful creatures? also how fast do they grow and how big will he get? :nilly:

Are you talking about 28 degrees C? I assume you are lol

He will get approx 3 feet in an aquarium, and they grow extremely fast. I keep all of my lungfish in room-temp water, so goldfish would be perfect tankmates, EXCEPT for the fact that lungfishes will not tolerate tankmates for very long. If you happen to have a placid specimen, then you could test it, but be prepared for disappointment coming home one day.

Actually, goldfish are not nutritious as you might think, but they are a nice treat from time to time. (Same with algae wafers) You should add more variety to his diet - worms, shrimp, krill, pelletized foods and such.

i will look into it.....he likes hot dog peices as treats and some veggies, as well as worms and bugs i dig up outside sometimes

be careful what bugs you dig up and where they may be harboring pesticides and such which can cause some serious ill effects

i would be more concerned with hot dog pieces than bugs. i would definitely suggest discontinuing the hot dog pieces as they are just very fatty and unhealthy for the lungfish. stick with aquatic meaty foods such as shrimp and fish. algae wafers are good to give them as a supplement as they seem to benefit from having algae in their diets (all the lungfishes i have ever kept have done well with some veggie/algae material in their diets).

if you can post pics we can better ID your fish. although the P.aethiopicus is the largest growing of the lungfishes (in the wild), if it is P. aethiopicus congicus it will not grow to that size (even potentially), and it will take them quite a while to reach 3'. they do, however reach, 2' in a matter of 2-3 years. a 30g long tank will not hold them for long.

great fish, and good luck with it. and by all means, please let us know if you have further questions--

Yes, you'll need a MUCH larger tank, but hopefully (and probably) it is the annectens, not an aethiopicus.
I agree- lose the hot dogs and "all" the vegetable matter. They may eat some as a supplement, as suggested above, but they definitely should get mainly meat in their diet - Pelletized foods, cut fish, shrimp krill, etc, as I suggested above is a healthy diet, not hot dogs and goldfish.
