Subtle colours can be even better. I have a 3.5" young fossochromis rostratus growing out in my 75g and I'm pretty sure it's male because when the light hits his dorsal fin just right it's like electric colors. His body also shines blue when the light hits it right. They are a good example of a stunning fish that takes a long time to colour up.
