Is the thickness needed for normal glass the same as low iron glass.

for my 8 by 3 by 5 came out to about 1.5 inches thick. But i want to go low iron glass and i didnt know if it was weaker then normal glass. anyone have any insight?

No, there is no difference in strength.

Iron gets its strength from its crystal lattice structure (all metals do). In glass, the iron ions are homogeneously distributed throughout the glass, and they're usually less than 0.1% of the glass's total content. They don't form any kind of lattice with each other, or the silica.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they are identical in strength.

glass stores will get what ever size i want/need.

Last time I was looking for glass was ~ 3 years ago, and no one could get it in thickness greater than 3/4". Don't mean to question you, but have you actually gotten quotes, or is you just assuming? If you have quotes, can you share the price...I bet its a large number!! haha I am hoping to start a project in the fall (after my second is born) that may require 1", so I would be glad to hear thicker sizes are available.

In any case, strength is the same, and I believe last time I look at the data sheet, hardness was the same also, though I have seen may complaints that people feel its softer, and scratches easier than the standard recipe.

When i was calling around i wasnt sure what size i needed at the point so i asked if theyd beable to get certain sizes for me. Honestly at this point they can charge me whatever they want and get it because i NEED glass to finish this tank.

I remember reading once that the high iron in glass is what gives telephone pole glass insulators their dark blue and green color while the clear ones have far less iron in the sand used to make them.

It should be the same.
