A probe as stated above is an excellent choice, but there is also litmus paper available that is specially made for the testing of different pH values.

If not available locally, I used to mail order from Fisher-Scientific and found the paper test strips they provided to water quality labs very accurate for any number of parameters.
Many large cities have a Fisher Sci office or other chemical supply company that caters to the various labs and local businesses.
Where I lived there was also a American Science center that provided many of the things I couldn't obviously get in generic stores.
