Well I think my tank needs some plants. At the moment it looks blank with only one plant (a kleiner sword which is faring well). I was wondering what plant should I use to make a carpet, but yet stick to a low light. I was leaning towards the dwarf hair grass... and I also seemed to like the baby dwarf tears, but I hear they need high lighting. Any suggestions?

From my experience baby tears need high lighting. Dwarf hair weed grass should be awesome. What kind of substrate do you have?

both of those will require good amounts of co2 to fully carpet. you could look into marsilea quadrifolia

^ I have a DIY co2 system but not the strongest lighting. Thus would dwarf hair grass work? As the newer planted aquarist, what's the common name for marsilea quadrifolia?

Just so you know dwarf hairgrass takes forever to spread. I have diy co2, and 3.8 wpg in my tank, and its been like 6 weeks. Still wont spread, but it does grow. Just thought I'd give you a heads up as I didn't know about how long they took until they were already planted.

cryptocoryne plants will spread - - eventually - - and don't require either CO2 or intense lighting to do so . . .

what is your substrate?

^ fine gravel with nutrients in the gravel, or so the package said. I have a bit dimmer lighting then the usual high tech planted aquaria.

I hear you have to cut them, then they'll send lots of runners out and spread.

DHG can be super picky...co2, fine nutrient enriched, algae free substrate, fertz, and high light are usually recommended.

They are just not tolerant to conditions other than what they want. You give them that they can spread fairly quickly. I have a buddy doing it with eco complete, diy co2, and 36w on a 10g tank.
