low water level

i see all kinds of tanks that are not filled to the top why is this is there any benefit to this

Some tanks might contain fish that like to jump. This can help keep them in. Others, just liek to have the water a little lower, just for looks.

some fish need a lower water level, like bichirs.

also the filters can cause more water disruption for a higher level of oxygen.

I can't fill my tank all the way up because my lungfish has to breath!

various reasons i keep my water 1/2-1" below the trim

-jumpers
-labyrinthine fish/air breathers
-surface plants
-the lids are reversible which means the have handles on both sides
-extra water movement
-im lazy and the shrimp dont mind (shrimp tank only)

but more than anything...

-EARTHQUAKES!!!!!

Another reason would be the height at which peoples overflows are mounted - those with sumps at least.

I personaly and think most people also just like keeping it 1'' or more below the rim for many resones.
