whats up people, my bichir count is now up to five but they are all upper jaw.

what i need know are at least two lower jaw bichirs to finish my collection for now and would like to know some good selections to pick from also were can i get them from? I think toyin has some but he hasn't contacted me back yet and are there any common names for these type of bichirs so that i can have my lfs look for them.

last question: how long before you should be able to sex bichirs, hope to at least have either two females and one male or two males and one female ornate so that eventually i could breed them any info will help. thanks crew yall the best holla back!!!! :woot: :clap  :headbang2

ime ornate might/should be able to be sexed by the time they reach 10" or so, though sometimes may be possible to make a pretty good guess before that. as far as age, i'd say by 2 yrs of age or so you should be able to tell for sure.

there are only a handful of lower jaw bichirs that are available. P.bichir lapradei, P.endlicheri endlicheri (saddled bichir) and P.endlicheri congicus (congo bichir). of the three congicus grows the largest. what size tank do you plan to keep them in?

personally i wouldn't trust lfs to get the right fish even if you give them both the common and scientific names, esp when it comes to the less common ones like these.

P. endlicheri endlicheri ('saddled' or 'red' bichir)- 32", possibly more
(subspecies)P. endlicheri congicus ('giant' or 'congo' bichir)- 39"
P. Bichir lapradei ('Lapradei' bichir)- 24"
P. bichir bichir-30+ ''

You shoul be able to reliably sex most bichirs at approx.7-8inches-Anne

alright beblondie you done answered everything else now try this.

tank size is 120gallons, already have 5 upper jaw bichirs: 3- ornate, 1 senegales and 1 delhzi, now the question is how many can i keep in this tank? would like to add atleast 2 more lower jaw bichirs to bring my total to 7 and if possible maybe even a total of 9 because toyin has 4 very nice bichirs that i would like to get, but i would also like to know would this many lead to adequite growth rate so that they can eventually get close to full size.

HOLLA BACK ON THIS ONE PEOPLES, IN A MINUTE!!!!! :WHOA: :screwy: :naughty: :grinno: :grinyes: :woot: :clap :headbang2

A standard All Glass Aquarium 120 Gallon 48x24x24 and you have to remember the adult sizes of the occupnts you have already
3 ornates 20+inches each
1 senegal 12 inches
1 delhezi 12-14 inches
plus all the other inhabitants which get fairly large.
In my world its fully stocked if not over stocked .Are you planning a bigger tank? -Anne

thanks doc, maybe move on up to 200+ gal in about 2-3 yrs, so no time soon!

so beblondie that means i shouldn't put anymore bichirs in this tank :( , rats thats no fun.

hey yall, toyin has an endi endi"chad" and a endi endi"guinea", whats the difference? any pics out there!!!!?

If Your tank is large enough, I really encourage You to go for those. They are quiet and nice fish, not really agressive. As they are not really active swimmers, a tank of 500 liters should be enough, if You don't put in too many.

The sex of a bichir should be distinguished, when the fish is about one year old.

Best Greatings
