I know any answers I receive will be mostly educated guesses since we've yet to pull off successful captive breedings, but I'm still curious about what you guys think...

I have a 14'' male Koliba, and judging by the size of his fin, he had gone through puberty before I got him. I also have a 12'' male Endli who I THOUGHT had already gone through his puberty stage, swimming around and flexing/cupping his suddenly-quite-large fin. Both of them were calm and quiet for months together and didn't do any displays or flirting with anyone. I got my female 14'' Bichir Bichir about a month ago, and she originally wasn't getting along very well with the Koliba. She seemed to be the aggressor, but we let them work it out. Now, he swims around her almost obsessively, lining up next to her (sometimes head to head, sometimes head to tail) and vibrating his entire body and trying to breed. She pays no attention, and actually pulls her fins in to her body like she's trying to protect herself from bites. He pushes her around the bottom of the tank like a stick and she just tolerates him. The Endli has also started doing displays again, though he seems to be just trying to show off to the Koliba, kinda like "hey I got a peter too!" He hasn't seemed to bother with her too much, or at least he isn't as pushy as the Koliba.

Does anyone think the two bigger fish are old enough or big enough? I know the Endli may not be, even if he IS doing displays... but the thought of EndliBichirs or KolibaBichirs is getting me a bit excited.

How old are they is the question, btw below is da list of whats been captive bred
upper jaw
senegals
delhezis
pollis
ornates
LOWER JAW
laps
endis

I wish I knew. We've had the Endli the longest... I got her as a present to myself after my car accident which was fall of 06. He was about 8 or 9'' then. Growth has been slow, though recently his appetite has skyrocketted. The Koliba I got for my boyfriend Christmas of 2007, and I think he was about 12 or 13'' when we got him. And as we all know, fish grow at different rates - I've seen one baby endli put on over an inch a month, and I've seen another endli on the same diet of the same age in the same tank with little to no growth rate at all. So basically, I don't have a clue. Even less so with the Bichir Bichir - I've only had her a month.

I WOULD think that if she isn't paying any attention to the males that she isn't old enough (or is a smart girl and knows they aren't the same species).

You may wanna add p. endlicheri congicus, p. bichir bichir and p. ansorgii. Singapore, Indonesia and Japan have done breeding them.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, so this will undoubtedly fall on deaf ears, but please don't cross breed your bichirs! It's hard enough to decypher what one has already with out throwing mixed breeds into the pot! Sorry, just MHO.

That depend on the owner and she got to take responsibility for that. The best advise is not to sell the hybrid fish.

don't breed em,you won't have to worry about selling them

I am very interested in this too. But, we don't even know what Koliba are, don't confuse us even more

I'm not TRYING to breed these fish... just curious if they could actually pull it off. Breeding of bichirs in the home aquarium is extremely rare, and if I could get some to breed I'd be very happy, regardless of species. As for selling them, the odds of them successfully breeding are like one in a million, then the odds I'd recover a decent amount of eggs even smaller, and the odds that they would actually breed, I'd recover the eggs, and that they would ALSO hatch and not eat each other as they grow are just insanely minute. Should someone be interested after all of that doesn't happen, I'll be sure to let you know.

But I bet the offspring would look pretty badass... :D
