I'm setting up a new tank next week, and I wanted to make it a planted tank. I want to use a dark grey/black sand as the top layer of substrate, but I'm not sure what bottom layer(s) to use. I don't I can use something like EcoComplete because it will mix up with the sand. Anyone have any advice?

You might want to consider other options. If these substrate layers become disturbed at all the the EcoComplete will tend to float on top of the sand, because it is lighter in weight.

Is there anyway to have a suitable substrate for plants while having the top layer consist of sand?

I use black gravel and it works great NOT the glass black type. Than pour your black sand over that

Get the ESTES American brand because it stays black while the made in China type leaches black dye .

I didnt know there was a difference picked up both brands and wound up throwing the made in China chain pet store brand junk away. The Estes brand is great.
