Somebody dropped off a 10" chinese hi-fin 'shark' at the store I work at and he has been suffering ever since because even the tanks without heaters maintain a constant temperature of 78 because of all the reptile heat lamps in the area. So I brought him home because the temps are starting to affect his health, I just need to know, if I lower the temps in my 180g to 72 degrees will it be detrimental to my other fish (see my signature) if I keep the temps that low until I can get the shark into his own pond.

Not sure what the current thinking is but years ago many recommended lower temperatures because the fish ate less and it slowed the fish's biological process producing less waste and aggression. Also saved money running the incredibly inefficient heaters of the time. I don't recommend a sudden drop in temperature it tends to lead to ick. A slow drop should be fine though.

I plan on slowly lowering it, I just wanted to know if 72 is considered a safe temperature for some of the fish in the tank.

Might want to research your fish specifically to see of there are any that are particularly sensitive to temps around 72. My tanks average around 75 and I don't have any problems. That is for my SA/CA and African chichlid tanks. My SW is generally a bit higher.

at 72 degrees you will be fine. They will eat less and maybe a little less active. My tanks are around 72 during the winter months which I think causes them to spawn like crazy during the summer months when the temp rises.
