my nitrate levels are pretty high as well as my general hardness. should i do multiple water changes in the next week or....? i'm bringing home my jardini soon and i want perfect water parameters for it.
the only thing to lower nitrates is water changes. if the GH is lower in your tap water than in your tank, then water changes will fix that, too. if not, you gotta lower your GH somehow.
whats your gh level? its gonna be a PIA to lower your gh cause everytime you do a water change and add fresh water, its gonna raise your gh. its easy to make soft water hard but its difficult and expensive to make hard water soft
What are your nitrates and gh from your tap water? You need to know these to make sure doing water changes alone will help to lower the reading in your tank.
I'd leave the gh & kh (the 'hardness') alone and just get those water changes done to lower the nitrates. My Discus are doing excellent in my super hard tap water (kh 14), even spawning. Jardini don't need water soft enough to make it worth screwing with your water. My best advice is to make a commitment to do better with your water changes so that your nitrates don't get so high in the 1st place.
My guess is long term high nitrates have sickened more fish than anybody realizes.
yeah, i guess the real question is WHY do you want to lower your gh. almost all fish will be fine with the water that comes out of your tap. the thing to remember is you need to be CONSISTENT with your water parameters rather than trying to reach a certain number.
fish are very adaptable. as long as the parameter dont fluctuate a lot, theyll be fine. i think you have nothing to worry about. just stay up on your weekly water changes to get your Nitrates down and youll be good
When I started off, I was really worried about the hardness of my water. But over time it became apparent that my fish had no problem with it, regardless of species or water sensitivity.
Basically whatever comes out of your tap, you're gonna have to accept unless you want to invest in a RO/DI system.
