Is there any reason why I could not run a submersable pump from lowes vs the high dollar ones from the pet stores. The lowes pumps are cheaper and have a higher gph flow rate. Most pumps that I have looked at are for ponds or waterfalls and are around 2000 gph for around 120. My local petstores seem to charge around around 150-170 for pumps around 1000-1200 gph. I would also think a lowes pump would be built a little better then pumps for fish tanks.
I have seen scrubbies mentioned several times in the quest to build a wet/dry sump. Do the scrubbies take place of bio balls.
Right now I plan to have a three camber system then the area for the pump. First layer is a filter sheet of some sort. second will be carbon and blue filter (have some laying around), 3rd being bioballs (drip system for each section using the three shelf method).

You can use the HW store pumps. Just keep in mind that you get what you pay for. Pond/waterfall pumps are noisier and use more watts of power than the quieter and more power efficient pumps designed for in-home use.

Scrubbies (polyethylene, not the metal ones) are definitely used as inexpensive replacements for bio-balls. These scrubbies have more surface area for aerobic bacteria to inhabit and are less current restrictive than common bio-balls.

thanks guys, just shooting through a few questions in my head. Have a few on overflows also. I cannot see 90% of the pictures in the stickies. I have read about 2 different overflow pipe systems. The skimmer type is easy to figure out and lots of links from other sites. I read that their is another type the pulls from the bottom of the tank. Anyone have pictures of this? Seems like it would be more efficient in waste removal on the bottom of te tank. A combination of both would be completely cleaned in my mind. Thanks-just trying to put the pieces together.
