I have a 2 year old who loves fish, he has a 5 gallon in his room with 2.. no wait 8, no wait, 32 guppies in it. I picked up another tank off of freecycle, a 55g.

My thought is to put it against my stairs in the living room but down low. I'm thinking the stand being 21". The tank is 20", so the top of the tank would be about 41". My son is 36" tall (he's a ]V[onster 2 year old) so I figure that would put his eyes right in the middle of the tank.

Anyone ever had a tank this low? Is there some drawback I'm not thinking of? I'm not all that worried about tank slapping, he's pretty respectful of his tank.

I have my tank on the floor in my room, its in an area where i don't walk so i don't scare the fish. But i am guessing that if you have yours up just a little bit it should be fine as long as the stand is made well.

The lower you place the tank, the greater the atmospheric pressure. According to my calculations, if you place the tank a mere 21" off the floor, the fishes' eyes will most likely explode.

Are you serious?

EXPLODING FISH? You've GOT to be pulling my fin. They'll be fine near the floor and your tank will do fine but you won't be able to tuck a canister filter under it so plan on a power filter that hangs on the back or a canister on the side. I've kept fish 2 feet off the floor and NEVER had ANY problems. Go for it, you'll be fine.

The fish will be in water, theres no way the pressure will affect them.

I think as long as you kid-proof the hood so he can't climb in and drown, or put things into the tank you wouldn't want him putting in there, it'll be a nice thing for him to enjoy. With the tank that low, he will be able to help with their care when he's a little bit older too. Wouldn't want your keys or phone to end up in there. And I agree about the risk of pulling it over also.

honestly, if he's only two, I'd buy him a nice stepstool with a cushion he can sit on. Before you know it, the hood will be eye level. Do you really want to tear down the tank and replace the stand every time he has a growth spurt?
