my new hermit crab setup is lit by an incandescent bulb right now, and i doubt my dad will see the sense in getting a screw-in CFL bulb.
so, would i be able to keep some live rock in the tank, which most likely wont have the light on often? will the organisms and algae on the rock die off?
i just want to have a small ecosystem going in this tank.

Well live rock itself not an issue in the dark, the biofiltration in liverock again no problem in the dark, but any corals or algeas on it will likely die, which shouldnt be a problem so long as they dont spike ammonia to high, if you like/know how you could add some filter feeder corals to spice it up a bit (as many need no light at all), though they are rather high maintenance food wise.

this is gonna be a fairly low maintenance setup, so i think ill just put in the rock and see where it goes from there... my room is very bright so maybe there will be enough light for a small amount of algae.
im definitely not going the coral route though.
thanks for your help.
