Ok, I have a 75 gallon I'm using to grow out my Lima shovelnose and my new Red tail, at the moment the lima is at 5" and the red tail is at 3". and have been wondering if having them together could cause any problems...
so is there anything I should be worried about?...

If your talking about a RTC then understand that RTC's dont have tankmates....just meals they are saving for later. RTC's grow much larger and more importiantly....much faster than a lima. Other than that however you shouldn't have any aggression problems they way you might with cichlids. RTC's either eat it or leave it for later. They do of course check the other fish in the tank from time to time with thier wiskers for size....

Ok, that helps. I already knew the difference in growth rates, and don't plan on letting the Red tail get the chance to munch my Lima. However I was a little concerned that my lima might beat up on him while he was little ( shows how long its been since I last had any catfish). thanks.

RTC's are tough buggers...and don't make the mistake of underestimating the size of fish a RTC can scarf down when the mood strikes it. Most everyone with big cats...myself included...have made this mistake at one time or another.

RTC's have a heavy body for thier size so at 3" it's not out of the relm of possibility that it could down a 5" lima with a slender body.

other have put it we'll your fine till the RTC can eat the lima and they will theres pics on the web site somewhere of a large RTC eating a smaler one if it fits in a RTCs mouth its food

good to know, but then I must ask... are there any fish that could possibly stay in with a
RTC?, I mean without him just chowing down?...
yes any fish that is to big to eat and isn't too aggressive pacu for example work we'll other large catfish and peacock bass work we'll to aros can work but many people here have had a problem with loseing there aros so any fish that grows fast enough will work fine RTCs aren't aggressive just very preditory

If the RTC's well fed they can live with fish larger than themselves but it's always a temporary measure...not a lot of fish in the hobby get as big as the RTC eventually.

Definiately be careful of what you put in there. I was lucky enough to get a pretty mellow RTC. I got him very small and was worried about the Dats having a meal...4 weeks later, I was worried about one of the Dats becoming a meal, but the RTC was a good catfish and now it lives with a CK that's about 3" bigger.
