Question: can I put open cell foam in the overflow to keep fish from swimming into it? Making slots in the overflow is not an option.

Rant:
This fish called Z is so lucky because several months ago he jumped out of the tank and dried up on the floor and lived. Yesterday I decided it was not fair to not keep him in the big tank with my bala's since he lived in the 55 gallon with them.

Today i came home checked all my fish like normal every one was cool, worked on my stove for a while, took a break and decided to watch the fish. I notice he is missing, Right away I knew his Dumb F A swam down the drain, and sure enough there he is in the mech section of the trickle filter. Luckly for him once again I didnt drill the holes big enough so that section is always half full of water.

Up to this I was not upset even though I knew it was going to be a PITA to get him out. What makes me mad is I am trying to save his dumb self and he keeps swiming deeper into the freaking filter.

Problem solved I cut the handle off two nets and stuck the nets in the overflows. now the fish will just get stuck in the overflow, but now I now I will have to clean

lol , lucky fish indeed. That takes some patience. The nets thing sounds like a good idea though maybe just consider it some course prefiltration. Should help chunks of food (Whole krill, pellets etc) from entering the sump :) See there is a positive side.

I would get some egg crate or something similar and put in around the overflow.

I had a savannah monitor once that I had to personally save from death half a dozen times, but he still hated my guts. Not a fish, but same concept. Pet's can be ungrateful little asses sometimes

What a little swine he is. I had something similar happen 2 days ago, a featherfin catfish decided he'd go for a walk around my bedroom. story goes; i go down stairs at 1am to watch some tv come back up at 3am and hes no longer in the hospital tank. I amediatly go crazy looking for the little buggar, by chance i turn over a shirt thats on the floor and there he is STILL BREATHING 5ft from the tank. chucked him back in and now hes fine. close call that one. i feel your pain brother ;)

I put gutter guard around my over flow. It is a nice plastic mesh from Lowe's. I had the problem of fish riding the 1 1/2 pipe to the sump. so I put a plastic drain cap over it and then it started killing the smaller fish because they would get stuck to the top of the drain due to suction, So that is when I added the gutter guard barrier.
