So I've been into fish for about 2 months now had my 70 gallon and 30 gallon chichlid tanks for about a month... So far I've gone through 3 filters and 2 heaters that have broken down and needed to be replaced with new ones. so the starting up of these fish tanks is costing me a fortune! However i think i have the luckiest fish in the world, had 3 of them float belly up in the moving process right after buying them and have been able to nurse them back to health. Had one last night that jumped out of the tank probably a good hour or so before i woke up because he was very dry, he lived, but the surprising part of that is that i do have a cat and he didn't eat the fish... But i mostly wanted to start this thread to see if anyone has any tips or pointers on keeping a filter lasting more than a week. I've tried 3 different brands of filters as well Millenium, Penguin, and AquaClear... I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my power outlet or what but they just keep dying power wise.

yea i dont think its the filters. i have run some cheap filters before for years. then left them in a shed for a year and cleaned them and they are still working today.
maybe check the impeler. practice taking them apart and knowing how they work and you will prob find the problem really fast.
but if set up properly they shouldnt have any problems.

Not a fan of Millenium, Penguin, and AquaClear
But they're not burning out after a week
Do you have sand?

Are you plugging them straight into the wall? Have you tried good voltage regulating power strips (or at least good surge protectors?)

Your units just completely die? Won't power on at all? Have you ever used those outlets for any other electronic devices? Have they killed anything else?

If your filters are dieing that often, that consistently, all I can think of is power spikes frying the motors/electronics.

+1. I'd probably have that outlet checked out, and at least get a good surge protector.

Got to be the power source or somthing else.

Are you filling them with water first before plugging them in? I have an aquaclear 500 on my 50 gallon that is 20 years old and runs like a champ. Also if you have sand that will jack up a hang on the back filter in no time. Also get that electricial checked by a licensed electricain before you have a possible fire. Good Luck.

thank you for all the responses! To answer the questions...

yes i have sand but there is no sand in the filters and my other 2 tanks on sand are working fine it's always the same tank that kills the filter so i'm leaning towards power of some sort

I've been plugging them into a multi port cable but not a surge protector

not plugging it in before filling it i make sure to fill it first

and I think i will get an electrician to check it out

stop plugging in filters and move the tank for now, have the power checked. cheap hang on filters usually last forever. FIRE IS NO FUN
