I recently added 3 1" yoyo (Pakistani) loaches to my planted tank. I also have cats (the four legged variety), and one of them is really into my tanks. The planted tank is the only tank that isn't covered and the cat in question spends loads of time looking at the fish and scratching the glass.

Recently she has been standing on the table and stretching up to do some "fishing". She can only just get the tips of her front paws into the water, but yesterday I saw her in the middle of the room with something at her paws ... the yoyo loach!

I picked it up (with some difficulty) and put it back into the tank. I didn't think it would make it due to its injuries and the fact that I had used my bare fingers to pick it up. It also took a few tries before I could pick it up cos it was squirming so much, and it was at least 2m from the ank. But this morning it was just as active as ever, gobbling up blood worms like usual.

great story, i would damn near kill the cat!!!!

Be careful, not only for the obvious but for the not so obvious. Cats urine is basically ammonia, they stomp around it in their litter box and get it on their paws. Their paws go in the water, and next thing you know, you have fish dying due to an ammonia spike. Personally, I would either cover the tank so that the cat can't get to the surface or keep the cat from entering the room the tank is in. Just my $.02. Hate to see fish die when it is preventable.

Sounds like good advice to me. That is one tuff loach!

OMG I remember my very first fish tank!! I didnt have a cover just some goldfish in there... My cat would always sit by the tank looking at the fish! ( He was declawed) So one night i am watching T.v on my bed and just happen to glance over as my cat is leaning over the top to take a peek, and WHAM!! He falls right in!!!! Well he screached and jumped out right on me!!!! I was soaked, the bed was soaked, but man oh man was it ever funny!!!!!!! (He never went near the tank again)!!!

One of my other cats did that. He's quite a lazy bast**d and used to enjoy chilling on the light of the one tank, which is the same one which I later changed to planted. He couldn't even get out cos I had dropped the water level for a baby aro that I had in there.

Anyway, he doesn't sit up there any more :grinyes:
