Lumps on oscars head?

I've seen many oscars throughout the years, a lot in which seemed to have swelling or lumps all over their head. Now my dads Oscar is getting it. I figure its not supposed I happen, but I don't know if there's a way to stop it or if it will kill him. I'm making hi do water changes, but if someone knows anything about the lumps, or can point me to a website that covers it then please enlighten me.
