Lung Coloration - Subspecies???

Okay... There are LIGHT TAN P. annectens, and then there are the more common BLUE GRAY P. annectens.

Are they different subspecies? Is that how you can tell, or is it just more of a regional thing?

I'm not sure if anyone can help out, but if so, I'd love to hear from you!

Moreover, the tan ones are very lightly, or un-patterned, whereas the blue ones are strongly patterned (Most, not all of them, though.)

Any input here?
 
I think the less patterned one is the protopterus annectens brieni (?) or something like that and the more spotted one is the protopterus annectens annectens.
not so sure about this.
