Hi,

Let's suppose hypothetically, that you have a lung fish that's approximately 8 inches in length housed in a large rubbermaid container in about 20 gallons of water. There's no filtration. The water is heater appropriately. Waste is scooped out with a net.

You get the lung fish on Wednesday of last week. When should you change the water? About how often should you change the water?

Thanks!

I would hypothetically move the lung fish to an appropriate home. But if current conditions delay that change 30-50% of the water daily

You should have changed the water Thursday of last week. Daily water changes are needed if you're not using a filter.

Out of curiosity, what's the plan for it when it outgrows the container?

It'll be moved into appropriate sized containers as it grows. :)

Thank you very much. This will hypothetically be the enclosure for the fish for some time.

I don't keep fish and as a result, know little of their care. If a lungfish was kept in these conditions, when should the first water change be done? I was under the impression that frequent water changes aren't good to do.

Don't bother getting it if that's going to be its aquarium for longer than a week or two, if that.

Why not just do it right and get an aquarium with filtration?

It's a weird situation I know... and I completely agree! You would be doing me and the fish a huge favor by helping me with this filter-less hypothetical situation.

Water changes should be done every day from the day you get it and they have to be large ( at least 50%)

I thought that frequent, large water changes are stressful? Could water changes be done based on water quality tests? Like if the water quality tests are good, water wouldn't need to be changed?

Water quality on something that small thats unfiltered will constantly be declining. Its less stressful for the fish if you match temps as close as you can
