i have a 9 inch lungfish in a 24 inch deep aquarium, a friend said that i have a problem and my lungfish needs about ten inches of water.. is this true?
At 9 inches I would think its okay at that depth. I had mine in my big tank when he got to around 7 inches, but u suppose it depends on the lungfish. If he seems to be swimming to get air fine then he is good.
You need to lower the water to about 12" because they can drown if they have trouble reaching the surface for any reason. You also want to have floating plants and other decorations that will allow it to rest near the surface if it wants to do so.
I had a ~6" lungfish drown in about 12" of water, so that's one reason why I can say I know from experience what can happen when a smaller lungfish is placed in too deep of water.
he stays hidden in the rocks during the day but im not in the room much however a few times as i walked to the room i saw him at the surface with his head out of the water for about two seconds and then he would head back down. Also i have some 1 inch crayfish i added to the tank, think he will eat these guys? i just got him to eat pellets last nights after trying for two months..
if your lungfish is healthy then there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to reach the surface for air,but the sensible thing as mentioned are the addition of some floating plants etc for resting near the top, when i kept a 6 incher for a while he was in a 24" deep tank and it worked just fine
