I was just wondering if any of you have ever owned a dog with Lyme disease. If so, what kind of experiences did you have regarding disease progression, treatment, prognosis, remission, etc?

On Saturday, my husband and I adopted a 2 year old female Akita named Mya from an SPCA. They gave Mya her vaccinations and we took her home. After we explored the yard and the main floor of the house, she laid on the kitchen floor in the family area and fell asleep. On Sunday morning expecting to see a healthy young dog bouncing around our home, we found a very sick girl who could not walk or even stand on her own.

Immediately we called the emergency vet in our area and took her in for an appointment. 4 hours and some $600 dollars later, we had found our culprit...Lyme disease. The vet said that when the shelter vaccinated her it caused a hyper-immune response and her body couldn't handle it. They sent us home with some antibiotics and some pain medications. Sunday night she drank some water and ate a little food, we managed to get a couple doses of the antibiotic down her. We knew it would take a few days for her to be feeling better.

On Monday we noticed that she was worse than she was on Sunday and not eating or drinking anything, back to the vet.... This time they kept her in the hospital. I thought we were going to lose her. They asked me to bring her something special to eat on Tuesday to make her feel better. I stopped at the store on the way home from work and drove to the hospital. When I got there, they told me she could go home.

When they brought her out she barked and jumped into my arms...She was a dog again and boy did she let me know it. I think I am going to be in trouble :WHOA:

She will continue her treatment for at least a month. The vet said in her experience it is common for them to relapse after a month and then she would need a second course of antibiotics. She said that they usually go into complete remission after that.

Your comments, suggestions, and input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

thanks Capt Positive :(

Sorry, I didn't mean to be a downer. Treatment has greatly improved in the last decade and now dogs can get shots to prevent it. In our case our lab was too far along when he first showed signs and our vets didn't know what exactly was going on until it was too late. His main problem was kidney failure and he couldn't keep down any food and slowly got thinner and thinner with each passing day. My parents spent thousands of dollars trying to treat him at various animal hospitals but in the end it was too late. All our dog since have had their lyme disese shots and it's definitely worth the money.

Glad she is doing better. Has the SPCA offered to pay the emergency vet bills?

A co-worker recently adopted a dog from a local shelter. The dog had heartworm, but no one knew it until a few weeks after the dog was adopted. The shelter paid for all of the heartworm treatments.

good luck with your poor pup, its so hard when they are ill :(
I would suggest going with the most natural, high quality food you can find and afford, I can make some suggestions If your interested, but cutting out extra toxins and stress on her body and immune system as well as the more available and wider range of nutrients in a very high quality food will go a long way towards complimenting the treatments for the lyme disease.

The SPCA won't pay anything towards her vet bills because in order for them to cover it, I have to take her to see their vet in the facility. If that vet isn't available, which he or she wasn't on Sunday, then I have to cover the entire cost for medical treatment at another vet. Plus, we live some 4 hours away.

She is about 30-40 lbs underweight. She won't hardly eat anything if it is in a bowl or on a plate. She will only take food if it is offered on our flat hand. We have tried Science Diet, Hills K-D canned adult dog food, Beneful, Purina One, Innova, and Karma Organic. If you can make any other suggestions, we can certainly try it.

She was owner surrendered and they obviously didn't take very good care of her. It is August and she still had nearly her entire undercoat. I have brushed enough hair from her to make several sweaters and still have some left . They had to have noticed that you could feel every bone in her body, now you can see them. The SPCA told me that the previous owner told them that a child was teasing her with food and she grunted and tried to get away. His wife made him get rid of her because the Akita grunt was a sign of aggression. I don't think that is the real reason. She is about as vicious as a cotton ball, and the only thing she would do is smother you with kisses.

On a lighter note, Mya is bouncing around our family room area all the time. It is the only room she will go in for some reason. She tracks the rabbits, woodchucks, and unfortunately, the bear, when we go on walks. She runs, jumps, and plays, and seems to be happy.

If it were me I would get her on some lean meat, either raw or cooked, Maybe even boiled chicken or lean hamburger meat and cooked brown rice, or mixing some meat in with her food. IMO raw meat is best but fresh cooked is good too.

I have a recipe for satin balls that can help put weight on fast, I will dig it out for you if you like,
but basically its hamburger, cream cheese, peanut butter and some other stuff.

Beneful is crap IMO and so is science diet. Mine go nuts over Solid Gold WolfKing, it is buffalo and salmon, they also love Innova EVO.

I have a super picky eater Husky and he LOVES both of those foods, but he loves fish and meat even more.

A more reasonably priced option that is still good food is the chicken soup brands, I always look for at least 3 meat sources in the first 5 ingredients, and no corn if at all possible.
