I have had my lyonsi cichlids for about 5 months give or take and I have a pair that has bonded but have not spawn and they have been a pair for about 3 months and no eggs nothing. There is a la cebia freddy that is about 8-9" a florida gar about 13" a ornate bichir about 13" and my lyonsi pair that are 6" each in a 125 gallon tank. Now should I put a divider in for them to try and breed them or what can I try to help them breed

I just ordered myself a pair from Gage and I'm curious why no one is chipping in. Do you condition them with feedings? I've been asking various people on the forums about how to breed Jack Dempseys and cichlids in general. Everyone says about the same thing; water changes, high protein diets, and giving them their own tank. Those and also to wait... Sadly, it's pretty hard to wait. :irked:

My lyonsi have spawned several time. Useually shortly after a w/c. I dident do anything special, the only thing I can say is I do my w/c with slightly cooler water. But, realisticlly I don't think my lyonsi are the norm. I have 1 male about 8" and 3 females from 7" to 5". And a trio of seiboldii that are around 3 1/2" maybe 4". Mine are very strange because the male has spawned with each of the females and hasent seemed to "pair off" with any one of them on a full time basis. He will spawn with one, and use the other two as targets to keep the (temp) pair bond strong. But as soon as the male is unhappy with the female he is "bonded" with, he beats the crap out of her and then starts to court one of the other females.

180 gallon, 79F, eheim 2180, aquaclear 110
W/C 2x a week @ 50% (slightly cooler)
NLS 1 time a day, about 4-8 pellets each

I'm sure it wasent much help, but, its my experiance so the best I can do.
