I recently brought a 2.5 inch lyonsi and in troduced him to my main tank, however he is the smallest cichlid in the tank and was getting harrased quite a lot. I toojk him out and put him in my sons 140ltr guppy tank to grow out a bit, hopefully until he is big enough to go back in to the main tank.

My question is, for how long can i grow the lyonsi out in a tank of this size? (Footprint is approx. 36in x 12in)

Until he starts harassing the guppies. Until he starts looking too big for the grow out tank. Give him 2 months, and see if you see obvious growth. Change the water ALOT in the grow out tank while he's in there. He should be eating tiny pellets vigorously, too.

You want to look to be sure he's not shedding the intestinal lining, that's a sign of Hexamita--some kinda protozoan lives in the fish, keeps them sickly and skittish, they won't eat well, won't grow.

Also, sometimes, a fish just won't grow, won't work in a community tank, some are just runts and never reach a good size. I'd think a Lyonsi would be a pretty vigorous grower, but not every single time.
