Hello Everybody!

So I bought this fish from a private party, here in Las Vegas, a few months ago. The previous owner thought that it was a female flowerhorn. Being that I don't have much experience with Flowerhorns or Lyonsi, I didn't really question him. However, I was browsing through the fish for sale on MFK and I thought she looked an aweful lot like a Lyonsi. She is a pig of an eater and has grown at least 2 inches in the short time I've had her. She has to be 12" long now! Her colors are a lot brighter now also. Her fins are beautiful with that pink tint to them. Just been feeding her the Hikari pellets. She has taken a liking to the male Texas cichlid I have in the tank and they are trying to breed. She's in great shape because she owns the tank now. Anyways, any help would be appreciated.

This is my first post on MFK, but I'm sure it won't be my last. Long time enthusiast, first time poster.

Thanks,
Sean

Welcome to MFK, Slayer! That is a nice and solid fish but it definitely isn't a Lyonsi. There are a lot of threads about Lyonsi on this forum. Search through them and you'll see the big differences between your fish and theirs. Most of the time Flowerhorns of this kind are confused with true Trimacs and not Lyonsi. That's why searching for a pure Trimac can be a bit difficult unless you're dealing with a reputable vendor or member. If you are looking for a Lyonsi there are plenty to go around on this forum. When a fish like this is sold as a Flowerhorn, more than likely it is and should be considered as such. In any case you have yourself a nice fish.

Thanks a lot for that detailed explanation! I don't think I've seen any Flowerhorns like her before that's why I was curious. There's a guy in town that's selling a big male dragon flowerhorn so maybe I'll pick him up and put the 2 Flowerhorns in their own tank. Thanks for the help!

Glad I could help. There is a FH section here on MFK that will help you find out more about hybrids including breeding them. There are many types of FH and other hybrids with names that I don't understand. The guys in that forum have a better understanding about FH and the resulting fry of certain mixes.

I have see FH being bred with trimacs and that's what I see when I see your fish

Absolutely a flowerhorn. She's nice! Probably a red dragon or less likely a blue dragon... Check out the flowerhorn section!

If it was sold as a Flowerhorn chances are it is... a Flowerhorn.

I agree that it looks like it has been bred back to a Trimac, but I don't see Lyonsi in there at all.

definitely a female red dragon FH. They look like trimacs because trimacs were heavily used to create this strain originally for their "flowers" and "teardrops"
