The latest issue of the Buntbarsche Bulletin, is a dedicated Central American issue, and it it there is a very informative article about M. regani.

Nice fish Steve. I used to keep this species a few years back. Mine were very aggressive but Ive heard other people say theirs were OK.
One of the nicest looking Veija in my opinion and they just keep on getting better and better with age.

Mine were also very aggressive (similar to their close cousin argentea)
I figured my 150 gal just wasn't large enough, or current wasn't strong enough to contain the aggression. In the BB article moderate to fast flowing rivers are their normal habitat, and largest numbers are found in swift flowing water.
I gave the one in my pic above, to friend with a 250 gal tank where it promptly killed an Amphilophous labiatus, and a Herichthys carpintus (both larger than it was).
