is there any way of telling if a mac is wild caught or tank raised and if not, are the majority of them tank raised or wild caught? I know they can be bred in captivity but from what I've read its more tricky than P. natts. I just got one and am curious about his origins. Thanks

pretty sure there's no way to tell in the tank, but some of the more experienced people on here can tell you if they're more frequently bred in captivity or wild caught. i think they'd be wild caught though cause from what i've read really the only ones that breed captive are rbp. i could be wrong, hopefully someone smarter than me (shouldnt be hard to find) will give you an answer.

ive read they have been documented breeding in captivity. im just not sure how frequent it is. most RBP in fish stores are tank raised. but with a mac, although its been done, idk how often. any input from experienced mac keepers would be greatly appreciate thanks !

more than likely, they're wild caught. I think it's a pretty rare occasion for macs to breed in captivity. I think the only documented cases are in extremely large public aquariums. Most private owners don't have the adequate space to breed macs. They're even considered lucky if they can get them to schoal without incident.

i hope its wild-caught. makes it more badass =) but yea. some of the guys on piranha fury claim to have bred them successfully. but idk if theres any truth to it, or how much space they would have to actually do it.

im sure it'd take atleast a couple hundred gallons. they'd need plenty of space to not tare each other apart before they hopefully breed.

doesn't require couple hundred gallons to breed mac. there are breeders out there supply lfs with captive breed macs.
here's one of them

piranha rob doesnt have a very good website lol. he isnt calling it by the correct name either. and who knows he could have very large tanks. im just asking if it is more likely that my mac is captive bred or wild caught.
