Does anyone know the life cycle on these worms, specifically the time they can survive without a host?

I recently acquired a lap from a reputable LFS and the guy told me they had been in for a month or so. I looked closely and didn't see any signs of any parasites. So I took him home and introduced him into one of my bichir tanks (take note, always quarantine). A week later, the parasite appeared. An ornate was infested about three times as much as anyone else. Anyway, since they are host specific (as far as I've read) I took the bichirs out into a 40 gallon Q tank and treated them with prasi, instead of treating the 150 gallon tank. The catfish and gar remained in the tank with no signs. So I'm wondering when is it safe to introduce the bichirs back into the tank? It's been 6 days with no polypterus in the tank. Have all the parasites died off yet without a host?

Thanks
Ed

Anyone?

Bueller?

;)

Is the tank bare bottom or does it have substrate ? i'd think that they will still be around i'd give it a few more days and keep an eye on the catfish and gar

Tank is BB. The cat and gar should not be affected because the only host it can have is polypterus, if I'm correct.

those worm are very nasty and disgusting, but they not hard to killed if you know the right way.
raise the temp to 32c/89f and add a litte salt (dont exceed 2000 ppm, or your bichirs may be killed), after some days(less than one week), they are gone forever... this is my exprience, hope to help.

I am having this problem with these nasty worms. I recieved several (many) ploys from a friend, a few days later I noticed that many of them, mostly the sengalus had these little hair like worms attached to them. I used Jungle Parasite something or other and after 4 days per directions I changed the water and applied one more dose. Now today, the fifth day since first dose, I see these worms attached to the glass of the tank all over the place. They are still attached to the polys also. So now I will try raising the temp. as stated above. I also added salt with the first dose.

I have searched and searched here and on the web and can find little to no help irradicating this nasty pest. should I wait and be patient or should I try something else. I know its only been five days but I hate seeing them.

I also used Jungle parasite clear, at half dose the fisrt day (thats all I had on hand) and most all of them died. I followed with a full dosage just to be sure and they are all clear. Its strange that yours survived. I've read that they can adapt to different medicines, so I would try another brand containing Praziquantel , like PraziPro.

Have you heard of Clout. I got this from a local LFS. They say it is what they use, but upon reading the directions they warn against using with bottom feeders.

sad to say, those aqua medicines really help little on this worm.
formalin will work best only if you are very experienced, because formalin is very dangerous, it will kill your fish immediately if you exceed the dose, raising temperature and adding salt is the easiest way to deal with these worm, my new delhezi and weeksii are wild from congo, they have many worms, after been put in the 32c temperature quarantine tank for 5 days, the worms are all gone, i didnt add any other aqua medicine:nutkick:
