anyone had sucess keeping these two together. Been out of the fish game for a few years and thinking about starting back had these and were always my favorite ,both but they were very aggressive, but never kept them at the same time

It's really a hit and miss and up to the individual fish. My Argentea is pretty laid back and does fine with tank mates.

I believe in 90 % of cases, argentea (especially male(, should be kept either in pairs with a comparable female, or alone.
To start, they "hate" any other similar shaped silver species, after that, unless the tank is over 300 gallons will try to take out any cichlid similar is size.
My argentea never bothered with small dither types, but killed any other Vieja, Paratheraps types, and after they were gone pinned a much larger dovii, and managuense in corner of a 6 ft tank .
In nature they are loners living in streams with a strong flow and drive out any other similar shaped cichlids from their territory.

maculacuada can be equally as aggressive.
It may work if you have a 300+gallon tank, because each species needs a much larger territory than their size suggests.

I think you’d be happier picking one of the two and going for a pair- by getting 6-10 juvies and let them pair up-
I’ve noticed when starting a new tank I want one of everything then as time goes by I realize that one or two species in groups can be so much more appealing-
Not saying either would work as a colony- just observations from being too ambitious in the planning process
