How can I deal with this shy fish. I took out the plant cover so he could get the crickets and he still hides behind the heater and acts wimpy. He also has an anchorworm parasite in his tail. I dropped in bloodworms and he would not eat them because I removed his cover.

Yesterday, he finally ate a medium large cricket so I thought I was on the way to crickets for food but now he is scared and on a food strike. The cricket is still swimming happily in the tank. :irked:

First, don't stress; second - find out if it really is an anchorworm or what type of parasite it can be, or whatever it is, anyway..you will have to atend to that firts of all imo

dude...just be lucky its not a murderer yet.

What are your water parameters? How long have you had him? If he has parasites, treat for them. Some Jars at that age are shy. Be patient.

Thanks, the parasite was one that he got from the wild. It appears to be a parasitic copepod of the Lernaeidae. The copepod buries it's head under the skin of the tail and the paired egg sacks trail in the water. Carp get a parasite like this as well as many marine fish. I have tried to take a pic of it but the jar is too skittish. Removing this parasite will really stress him.
