I ve had two motoros ( 1M 8", 1F 6") for about six months. This weekend I introduced a new motoro another male 6" and it seems like the older male is picking on the new one. Is this common? Ive always heard that they are usually so easy to get along. Also it seems like their behavior has changed, they dont swim around as much and prefer to stay burried in the sand.

they will probebly settle down in a week or so, just keep them well fed. Your other male might just be a bit jelous, he should start to mature pretty soon, another few inch's and he'll be ready for breeding.

Kev

what he said.... mine did this when i added a thrid ray before took about 2 weeks before all went crazy again...

if you have 2 males with 1 female i would say they will fight

i have seen a male with no claspers develope them fast and breed with the female even faster once a new male was put in the tank

this is a trick some breeders use to make their rays breed faster it worked for me

i had 1 x male 2 x females in my tank 1 month after i put a new male in the tank the male that was already in the tank bred with one of the females

thanks for the info. things have settled down. it would be better to have more females but these fish arent reddely available and if they are they are usualy not that nice, so when I see a good looking fish at the lfs I try and pick it up.

I agree. In my experience adding 2 males creates some competition for the female or females and one of them ends up producing pups soon. Hopefully that other male histrix comes in this week!

Mekoner, Cichlid City Aquariums will be getting some more motoros in the late spring/summer. I've gotten a few from him, and they're FAR nicer than any I've seen locally.

Hey Dave.. :)

I talked to MichaelH from this forum, and he said the same thing.. That you are better of with 2.2 when dealing with hystrix.. Then, when they start breeding, you can remove one of the males. :)
Anyway, that what im gonna do this time..
